Why the Fish Pan?

The original Fish Pan (formerly called the “Fish Pan Fryer” and the “Camp Fryer with Griddle Cover”) was first introduced in the early ’60s and discontinued in the early 2000s. Built for hosting the perfect fish fry, or to make a large casserole, cast iron users and collectors have loved using this pan when feeding a crowd.

The Fish Pan will be available on the Lodge website on February 26. To be notified when it’s available for purchase, sign up for our e-newsletter or follow us on social via the links at the bottom of this page.

What makes the new Fish Pan different from the original pan?

With most beloved pieces of our original line of cast iron cookware, we know the reasoning behind creation and can tell you all about the inspiration for design. The Fish Pan’s origin, however, is a bit of a mystery. Its story varies from person to person.

Former CEO and president, Bob Kellermann, and his cousin and Lodge historian, Carolyn Millhiser, believe its original design was modeled after a Radio Flyer® wagon and a Junior Tricycle, respectively. After many discussions and lots of research, we’re convinced the truth may forever remain a mystery. This familial debate makes us chuckle and we thought, “What better item to release for your next family gathering or fish fry?”

In the re-imagining of the Fish Pan, the Lodge product development team made three significant changes to the design.

  1. The thickness of the pan’s walls has been greatly reduced, removing almost two full pounds of weight from the final design!
  2. The feet on the bottom of the original pan were removed for more versatile use indoors, and we've included steel bail handles within each package for easy lift and carry.
  3. The new pan is seasoned and ready-to-use right out of the box and now includes Lodge branding. “Lodge” is inscribed on one handle and “1896”, the date of our founding, is on the other.

What is the Legacy Series?

As a family-owned and operated business for more than five generations, we at Lodge take pride in the fact that people use (and cherish) the cast iron products we make every single day. It’s a legacy created by our founder and great-grandfather Joseph Lodge that we are grateful to continue.

The Legacy Series was created in 2018 to reintroduce well-loved, retired pieces. We plan to release one from the vault every year, re-mastered to meet the needs of today’s cast iron users.

The first item in the Legacy Series was the Fluted Cake Pan. The Fish Pan follows as the second installment. The third item will be released in 2020. Want to be among the first to hear of each new release? Sign up for our email newsletter—or follow us on social for updates!
