6 Ways to Use Sear Blends Without Firing Up the Grill

By: Lodge Cast Iron / July 25, 2023

Grilling is all about infusing your food with big, bold flavors, but we think you can apply that philosophy to all kinds of cooking adventures. So we compiled a guide on taking our Sear Blends beyond the grill to everything from weekday salads to your bar cart.

Top it off

Just like you’d use one of our Sear Blends to season meats and veggies on the grill, you can use them to top off just about anything. We’ve been known to reach for them on pizza night, around the breakfast table, and even to season fries. Or you can take it a step further and integrate a Sear Blend into toppings and condiments.

This is a technique we use for the slaw that’s in our Sizzling Citrus Skirt Steak Tacos. We start with thinly cut cabbage, carrots, and onions, add crema and honey, then season with Sizzling Citrus to bring out all the sweet, citrusy flavors of the slaw.

If you like to pickle your own veggies, add Fireside Garlic and Herb or Southwest Kick for an extra dose of flavor that you can reach for whenever you top burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and tacos.

Get dressed

One of our favorite ways to take a salad to the next level is simply to make a homemade dressing. All you need to get started is a jar, oil, and vinegar. Then, add any emulsifiers like mayo or citrus juices. After that, it’s time for Sear Blends to shine! Use Southwest Kick for a salad loaded with chicken, corn, black bean, tomatoes, and onion. Or use Fireside Garlic and Herb to make your very own versatile house dressing.

Smash burgers
Slather on the sauce

If you really want to add a special touch to a dish, make your own sauce and season it with Sear Blends! Top seared steak or grilled tofu with homemade chimichurri loaded with parsley, fresh garlic, red pepper flakes, white wine vinegar, and Fireside Garlic and Herb.

When smash burgers are on the menu, combine Tennessee Smoke with ketchup and your favorite mayo (that’s Duke’s around here) to make a special sauce for your cookout.

Spread the love

When you reach for butter, reach for your favorite Sear Blend, too. Make a compound butter with Fireside Garlic and Herb and use it to finish off a crusty loaf of bread, a juicy steak, or mashed potatoes. In this flanken-style short rib recipe, we baste the ribs with Tennessee Smoke butter so the final result is jam-packed with delicious, buttery flavor. When the late-night munchies hit, we love to make homemade popcorn topped with butter and a generous sprinkle of Southwest Kick for a delicious snack with a little cowboy spice.

Smoked Skillet Queso
Dip and dunk

Whether it’s queso, buffalo, or spinach, we’re suckers for a good dip. When we make Smoked Skillet Queso on the grill, we sprinkle in some Sizzling Citrus. If we’re looking for something simple (and addictive), we whip up our Caramelized Onion Dip and add a dash of Fireside Garlic and Herb. However, our best tip isn’t even about the dip. Serve your dip with chips or crackers that have been dusted with a little extra seasoning, too!

Bottoms up

Last but not least: cocktails—because we think cooking is more fun with a cold drink in hand. For brunch, we love to dress the rim of our Bloody Mary glasses with Southwest Kick. Those homemade pickles will come in handy here, too! It’ll give your drink the spicy-salty kick you need to start your day. If you’re having people over for tacos and queso, salt your margarita glasses with Sizzling Citrus to add a hint of citrus around the rim. And as the night goes on, you can sprinkle a little Southwest Kick on lime to chase tequila shots. Drink and sear responsibly, folks!
